Matariki i te Pō / Matariki After Dark
Studio One Toi Tū welcomed hundreds of visitors to Matariki i te Pō, a special and intimate evening of creative celebration in honour of Matariki (Māori New Year). Held across the galleries, studios, and courtyard, the event brought together local artists, performers, arts makers, and the wider community.
Atmosphere, Music, and Whānau Fun
The night opened with a karakia and blessing from Kaumatua Raniera Kingi to welcome everyone into the space. Following this was a live performance by Sheldon Rua, hands-on lantern making and Koauau clay workshops by Natanahira Pona and Georgia Tikaputini Douglas Hood, freshly cooked hāngī, Māori Makers Market, multiple exhibitions, and Stacey Noel’s open studio. A highlight of the evening was the opening of a special interactive digital exhibition, Taniwha Besties Ride or Die, by Kahurangiariki Smith.
Visitors moved through a transformed internal space filled with ambient blue and green lighting to mimic the night sky. The Kitchen Project’s cookie-making table was a hit with younger guests, and the courtyard deck was vibrant with guests enjoying DJ Akunu’s curated Matariki-themed tracks while chatting over warm hāngī servings. “It was incredibly fun. The lights and vibe were impeccable,” said one guest. “A beautiful turnout for the night; lovely venue and ambience,” added another.
Showcasing Artists and Creative Conversations
The downstairs galleries showcased four exhibitions, with many artists speaking directly to their creative process during an artist walk and talk session on the night. Artist Matangireia Yates-Francis noted, “Really enjoyed the artist walk and talk and would gladly do it again”—a sentiment shared by fellow artists Marie Hemo Titi Mapa, and Paige Nebbeling. Visitors praised the curation and manaakitanga of the event, saying, “The flow of all the activities worked well and we felt incredibly looked after.”
Looking Ahead: A New Annual Tradition
The event also marked a new beginning for what will now become an annual Matariki event at Studio One Toi Tū. It was special to have many new faces in the space. We are grateful to all who contributed to Matariki i te Pō - from artists and stallholders to volunteers, performers, and guests - for making this such a meaningful celebration of Matariki at Studio One Toi Tū.
