Call for Exhibition Proposals
Each year, Studio One Toi Tū put out a call for proposals, inviting artists and collectives to apply for a chance to exhibit as part of its annual exhibition programme. The call opens mid year around June/July for four weeks. This is a key opportunity for both new and emerging artists looking to present their first exhibition, as well as for experienced creatives, established practitioners, and collaborative groups developing fresh work.
Studio One Toi Tū has long been committed to supporting a diverse and dynamic range of creative voices. The annual programme reflected this, offering space to artists working across disciplines including painting, photography, sculpture, installation, design, and multimedia. The call encouraged proposals that showed innovation, critical thinking, and a clear artistic vision. Artists are invited to submit ideas that pushed boundaries, told meaningful stories, or offered new perspectives within contemporary visual art practice.
Exhibitions selected through this process are allocated a hire slot of three to four weeks in one of Studio One Toi Tū the ground floor galleries or the Sidewalk gallery the street-facing window space. All of the gallery spaces are centrally located in Ponsonby and provided a high-visibility, accessible platform for artists to share their work with a broad and engaged audience.
Successful applicants received a range of practical support. While exhibitions were self-managed, Studio One Toi Tū provided technical advice to help artists install and present their work. Artists also receive marketing support to promote their exhibition through the Studio One Toi Tū promotional channels. This included basic listings, social media promotion, and access to resources for developing further marketing material. In addition, each exhibition will host a self-catered opening event, offering artists the chance to launch their show in a way that reflected their creative identity.
The call for proposals aimed to empower artists at different stages in their careers to realise their ideas in a supportive and professionally curated environment. Studio One Toi Tū valued inclusivity, experimentation, and artistic diversity, and the programme continued to represent a broad spectrum of practice and background.
Artists who had a strong concept, a body of work in development, or a desire to exhibit as part of a group are encouraged to apply. For many, this opportunity marks a key moment in their creative journey and is a stepping stone into wider networks, future opportunities, and public engagement with their practice.
